On Monday, May 15th, Pope Francis named The Reverend Ned Shlesinger, a priest from the diocese of Raleigh, NC a new Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta. Hear a few of his thoughts after the announcement was made public.

New Catholic auxiliary bishop introduced to Atlanta community

Bishop-designate Bernard E. “Ned” Shlesinger III, of the Diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina, was introduced to the Catholic community of north and middle Georgia on Monday, May 15. A smiling Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory made the announcement.

For his part, Bishop-designate Shlesinger held back tears as he talked about his ministry in the Tar Heel state. In a light-hearted moment, he admitted his interest in baseball (a fan of the Washington Nationals) and fishing. He greeted Hispanic Catholics in Spanish.

He will serve alongside Archbishop Gregory and Auxiliary Bishop Luis R. Zarama as the spiritual leaders of the estimated 1 million Catholics living in the 69 counties of the archdiocese.

In addition, staff reporter Andrew Nelson created a map featuring the ministries of Bishop-designate Shlesinger. He spent a several years in eastern North Carolina, learning Spanish from the people he served.
