ATLANTA—Archdiocesan and independent Catholic high schools captured 14 team state championships in the spring sports, such as baseball, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Here is a school-by-school breakdown:

State Champions

Blessed Trinity High School, Roswell

The girls tennis team defeated St. Pius X High School in the 2014 state finals 3 to 2. The doubles team of Kelly Higgins and Jessica Hyland won their match 6-0, 6-2, while the team of Megan Foye and Caroline Macolino won theirs 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The deciding point was captured during Monica Estep’s singles match (6-1, 6-3). Estep is a four-year member of the varsity team. This was Blessed Trinity’s sixth consecutive Class AAA state title and the seventh in the last eight years.

“That was exactly the kind of match we were expecting,” said Blessed Trinity coach Alan Keel. “St. Pius is tough, and it’s been like this every time we have played them this season.”

In golf the girls team of senior Gracie Henderson, her sophomore sister Nicole, and freshmen Hannah Jones and Sarah Leonard won the state championship by four strokes over defending state champion North Oconee High School of Bogart. It was Blessed Trinity’s first state championship since they’ve been competing in Class AAA. They won the state Class AA championship in 2009.

Gracie Henderson was the low medalist for the state tournament with a 75 and Nicole shot her all-time lowest with an 84 to help ensure the victory.

“Whether it was in the region championship or the state championship, all contributed to help make our team the success we are,” said head coach Tamara Chavis.

The Blessed Trinity baseball team captured its first state champion since 2006 by defeating Cartersville High School in both games of a May 24 double hitter (2-1, 3-2). The winning pitcher for game one was senior Ryan Young and game two, junior Brad Spinner.

Cody Roberts, the team’s catcher and closer, drove in the winning run of the second game with a two-out hit in the ninth inning. Roberts, a junior, had a .325 batting average for the two state final games and a .409 average for the season. He also finished the season with three homeruns, 13 doubles and 35 runs batted in (RBIs).

St. Pius X High School, Atlanta

The boys and girls soccer team swept the Class AAA championship for the second consecutive season. The boys defeated Oconee County of Watkinsville 2-0. With 15 minutes remaining in the second half, the match was tied 0-0 until senior David McNabb scored from a free kick. Junior Edmundo Robinson scored the second goal with eight minutes left to make it 2-0. It’s the team’s second state championship in a row, the third in the last four years.

The girls have now won five state championships in six years.

A decade after winning its last state championship, the boys’ tennis team defeated Woodward Academy, College Park, 3-2. It was a fitting way to send off retiring head coach Chuck Byrd, coaching his final season before retirement.

The boys track and field team outscored its close competitor, Cedar Grove High School of Ellenwood, by 39 points to claim the Class AAA state title for the second year in a row. Some of the top contenders on the team included: Austin Sprague, first place, 1600-meter run (4:18.24) and 3,200-meter run (9:17.30); Daniel Haugh, first place, shot put (59 feet, 10 inches) and discus throw (197 feet, 7 inches); Fred Dorsey, first place, long jump, third place, triple jump, fourth place, 100-meter dash (10.98); Andrew Anastasiades, second place, 1600-meter run (4:21.24), fourth place, 800-meter run (1:59.23); and Jonathan Rust, fourth place, pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches). The team was led by senior Jack Larkin, Class AAAA player of the year and tournament low medalist.
