Father Juan Anzora, parochial vicar at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Atlanta, will be a featured speaker at an HIV/AIDS memorial service, and Dominican Sister Mary Jane Lubinski, founder of one of the city’s largest HIV/AIDS nonprofits, is expected to attend. The service will be held Saturday, June 4, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 265 Washington St., SW, Atlanta, from 5 to 6 p.m. A short reception will follow.

Sister Mary Jane recently returned to the United States after working with children affected by HIV in Swaziland. She is the founder of the Living Room, the region’s largest nonprofit provider of housing and housing services for people living with HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1995, Living Room has helped more than 21,000 clients find and maintain permanent, affordable housing.

The memorial service will include a candle-lighting ceremony in remembrance of those who have been lost to the disease over the last 30 years and a call for a commitment to dispel the ignorance and stigma that have surrounded the virus.

Living Room is the lead coordinating organization. Other congregations and organizations supporting this memorial service include Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Atlanta AIDS Interfaith Alliance.

“This memorial service will be a time to reflect on the many who have fought and those who continue to fight the courageous battle against HIV,” said Dolph Ward Goldenburg, executive director of Living Room. “Faith communities have been an important part of this fight and we invite people of all faiths to share in this powerful observance.”
