St. Pius X High School safety Alex Avant, center, and defensive end Andrew Butler (#38) wrap up a Grady High School running back for a three-yard loss. The St. Pius defense was a stingy bunch as they held Grady scoreless for more than two and a half quarters. St. Pius remains undefeated after the 37-13 victory and captured its second consecutive sub-region title in the process.

St. Pius X High School defeated Grady High School 37-13 in the inaugural game of the Atlanta Public Schools’ Domecoming Football Classic at the Georgia Dome, Oct. 24, to capture the Region 5-AAA, Division B sub-region championship for the second year in a row.

Both teams entered the game with perfect records, but St. Pius dominated both sides of the ball against a Grady team that averaged 34 points per game.

St. Pius sophomore quarterback Trey White led the offense with 114 rushing yards. He scored the team’s first touchdown on a 27-yard run with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter. St. Pius added another firstquarter score when White threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Alden Homrich. Running back Cole Moon added the third St. Pius touchdown of the half on a 3-yard run, Grady got on the board with 1:47 remaining in the second quarter, and St. Pius took a 21-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

St. Pius scored its two second-half touchdowns on runs by Moon and George Kennedy to seal the deal and kicker Joey Gargiulo added a field goal with 3:59 left in the game for good measure. Grady scored six more points in the second half, but the St. Pius defense, led by safety Alex Avant, linebacker Robert Lucisano, defensive end Andrew Butler and others, held Grady to 118 offensive yards. St. Pius finished with 403 total offensive yards (367 rushing and 36 passing).

In its final game before the region playoffs, St. Pius (8-0) goes on the road to face Riverwood High School (2-6) Friday, Oct. 30.
