On Tuesday, March 18, the St. Pius X Golden Lions girls varsity tennis team (9-2) faced region and cross-town rival Marist School (6-2). The number two doubles team of senior Kate Papania and junior Michelle Lingner captured the team’s first victory in two straight sets. The next victory came from freshman Alexis Antista who also won in two straight sets. In a closely contested final match, the number one doubles team of juniors Sara Free and Hannah Kraus sealed the win for St. Pius when they came from behind after losing the first set 3-6 to win the second and third sets 6-4, 6-4. In addition to the team victory over Marist, the Golden Lions will be seeded number one in the region tournament, which will be held at the DeKalb Tennis Center April 15-17.

The St. Pius X boys varsity tennis team also won their match over Marist School. The number one doubles team of sophomore William Broder and junior Taylor Place won their match 6-2, 6-4. The number two doubles team of junior Ben McTier and freshman John DeRosa also battled to a two-set victory of 6-2, 6-4. The outcome of the match hinged on number one singles player, junior James Zaher, who was battling Marist’s highly ranked player Andrew Mulick. The players split the first two sets, so the match came down to the third and final set. Zaher clinched the set, 6-0, sending the Golden Lions home victorious. The boys also head into the region tournament as the number one seed.
