Remembering Deacon Gary Atkinson

BREMEN—Deacon Jon Garold “Gary” Atkinson died on May 29. He was 74 years old. 

He was born in June 1948 in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late Gail Atkinson and Dorothy Dudley Atkinson.

Deacon Atkinson served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Carrollton. He was ordained as a deacon in January 2004, and was a retired data processing manager for Sony Music.  

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Therese Benson. 

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn “June” Ferguson Atkinson of Bremen; children Jason and Paige Atkinson of Bremen; Joe and Melissa Atkinson of Temple and Gina and Craig Hall of Villa Rica; sisters Sharel Zelenka of Indianapolis, Indiana, Gaylene and Dick Smith of Marion, Indiana, and Rita and Bill Duncan of Marion; brothers, James and Penny Atkinson of Irmo, South Carolina, and Cornel and Pam Atkinson of Gas City, Indiana; grandchildren Hope Atkinson, Emma Atkinson, Rachel Atkinson, Ellie Atkinson, Amber Atkinson, Brooke Atkinson Smith and Jacob Smith and Leah Hall. 

The funeral Mass was Friday, June 2 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church with Father Tim Gadziala celebrating. Matt Young, William Weaver, Tim Bosworth, Dusty Atkinson, Jim Atkinson and Jacob Smith were pallbearers. 

Interment followed in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Cemetery. 

Memorial donations may be given to Tanner Hospice, Carrollton.
