Father James F. Scherer, who served in Atlanta, dies Sept. 15

GREENSBORO, North Carolina—Father James F. Scherer died Sept. 15 at AuthoraCare Collective/Beacon Place in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was 85 years old.
Father Scherer was born March 13, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was ordained to the priesthood May 16, 1964 for the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
While in Atlanta he served in several capacities including ministering to the community at then-St. Anna Mission in Monroe. He was the first director of Catholic Social Services in Atlanta.
In North Carolina, he served as a marriage and family therapist and certified social worker. He regularly assisted with Masses at Greensboro-area parishes.
In addition to his parents, Father Scherer was preceded in death by two siblings, brother Charles and sister Trudy. He is survived by his last sibling, Betty Ann McNamara. In addition, he is survived by 15 nieces and nephews and a multitude of great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial Mass was celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 with a reception to follow.
