Remembering Deacon Larry Casey

BLAIRSVILLE—Deacon Lawrence “Larry” Brennan Casey died on Feb. 21 at his home following an extended illness. He was 89 years old. 

Deacon Casey was born on Aug. 1, 1932 in Rochester, New York, the son of the late Joseph Casey Jr. and the late Irma M. Fagan Casey. He was a US. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War.  

Ordained as a permanent deacon in 1991, he served at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Blairsville, beginning in 1996.  

He received his master’s degree in social work and a master’s in theology. He worked as a counselor after retiring from Eastman Kodak Company.  

Deacon Casey loved his family, God and served both whole heartedly. He was preceded in death by grandsons, Shawn and Jeremiah; great-great granddaughter, Mariah; brother, Patrick Casey; sister, Linda Wyngard and daughter-in-law, Julie Casey. 

Surviving are his loving wife and best friend of 68 years, Rita Casey of Blairsville; his children and their spouses, Linda and Rich Krom of Waldo, Ohio; Debbie and Jim Foley of Alexander, New York; Dorothy and Chuck Covell of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida; Colleen and Tom Orchanian of Blairsville; Patricia and Gary Brown of Spencerport, New York; Kathy and Tom Oaks of Brockport, New York; Sue and Tom Schoenthaler of Newnan; Mary and Quintin Schwartz of Stanley, New York; Lisa and Bruce Johnson of Lawrenceville; Theresa and Bill Winchester of Port Orange, Florida and Michael Casey of Wetumka, Alabama; 33 grandchildren, 39 great- grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were Feb. 25 at St. Francis of Assisi Church with Father Mario Lopez celebrating. Interment followed at St. Clare’s Cemetery with military honors presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  

Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the Larry Casey Meditation Garden at the church.
