St. Pius competes for Class AAAA boys basketball championship title

ATLANTA—St. Pius X High School will return March 10 to the state basketball championship finals for the first time since 1992. The boys team advanced to the title game after defeating Sandy Creek High School, of Tyrone, in the March 4 Class AAAA semifinal game at Augusta University.

St. Pius held a double-digit lead of 38-28 at halftime. Early in the fourth period, Sandy Creek tied the score up at 52, but St. Pius ended the game on a 35-16 run to win 87-68.

Senior guard Carson Seramur led the team with 22 points. Junior guard Everett Lane and sophomore guard Matthew Gonzalo chipped in 17 and 15 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Zach Ranson led the team with 10 rebounds.

In the March 10 finals at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion, Atlanta, St. Pius (24-7) will take on undefeated Upson Lee High School, Thomaston.
