Notre Dame, Pinecrest rank in metro basketball tourney

ATLANTA—Boys and girls basketball teams from Notre Dame Academy, in Duluth, captured the Division A championship in the North Atlanta Metro League, a middle school league for private schools.

The girls won their championship game 39-19, beating previously undefeated Excel Christian Academy. The girls team consisted of fifth- to eighth-graders: Abigail Claire and Ansley Biggs, Sarah Bittner, Alexis Chang, Corinne Cookson, Alexandra Dollar, Lily Dougherty, Josie Fleck, Nina Heyn, Shannon and Sheila Lorusso, Madison and Sydney Lowden, Kyra Montes, Luisa Smolynsky and Maggie Thayer.

The boys defeated Cornerstone Christian Academy of Peachtree Corners 31-29. The boys team consisted of sixth- to eighth-graders: Thomas Chang, Grant Cookson, Cooper Curtin, Keenan Finneran, Dermot Hegarty, Grant Johnson, John McKimmy, Brandon McPherson, Jack Rasmussen, Preston Schaefer, Trent Schweizer, Daniel Teran and Andrew Van Wie.

Notre Dame is an independent, Marist-sponsored Catholic school.

Pinecrest Academy girls earned second place in the Division AA championship game. The Cumming independent Catholic school lost to Mt. Bethel Christian Academy of Marietta 43-28. The Lady Paladins of Pinecrest finished their regular season 13-1, 10-0 in their region and 15-2 overall.
