St. Ann’s Knights Council To Sponsor Poster Contest

Published November 22, 2012

One way to fight the ever-present epidemic of substance abuse is through the spread of information. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 8376 at St. Ann Church in Marietta believe that increasing public awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse has brought about significant results. They have been active in the fight against all forms of substance abuse for years.

The KOC Council, in collaboration with the parish school of religion and the middle school EDGE ministry at St. Ann, is sponsoring a Substance Abuse Awareness poster contest.

The purpose of the contest is twofold: to promote local awareness about the overriding societal problems of alcohol and drug abuse among young people and to generate fresh ideas for KOC posters and literature about substance abuse awareness.

Open to all boys and girls ages 8-14, the poster contest will be conducted at the local level with winning entries progressing through district, regional and state levels—all the way to the international level.

Posters, which can be in color or black and white, must reflect either the theme of alcohol awareness and abuse or drug awareness and abuse. Each poster should be the original work—including concept, layout, slogan and visual images—of a single person. Posters must be 11×17 inches in size. Posters drawn with pastels, chalk or charcoal must be laminated or covered with clear plastic.

Each entry must be submitted with a poster contest entry form, which can be obtained at the parish. The name and age of the person entering the poster should be included on the back of the poster.

Judging will be done by teams of young people, Knights, teachers, administrators, students, substance abuse counselors and law enforcement officials.

The winning entries at the international level will serve as the basis for a series of posters on substance abuse awareness, with creative credit going to the artists. The posters will be distributed throughout countries where the Knights of Columbus are present.

For additional information about the contest, contact Pat Evans, Knights of Columbus Council 8376 youth director at (770) 321-2402 or at pat.evans88@comcast.net or Jan Colpo at (770) 552-6400, ext. 6044, or at jcolpo@st-ann.org.

Completed posters and entry forms can be turned in to Teena Kay at the St. Ann parish office. The deadline for entries is Dec. 30.
