SPX Marching Band Wins Division Title

Published November 8, 2012

The St. Pius X Marching Golden Lions Band brought home trophies from a recent competition.

The 53-student band won first place for Class AAA band, drum major, and flag line. In addition, the band scored high enough to win the overall Silver Division that combined all bands in Class A, AA and AAA. The competition was at West Forsyth High School on Saturday, Oct. 27.

This year’s show theme was “Influence From Beyond” and was a futuristic show with music from the “Tron Legacy” and “Inception” movie soundtracks. St. Pius band members used a special effect at the end of the show by changing parts of their uniforms to neon green to accent the futuristic side of their show, according to Chad Paetznick, the school’s director of bands.

The band is led by drum major Kaleb Parks, who is in his first year in the position. He also plays clarinet and made the District Honor Band last year.

The band is familiar with trophies. Since its start in 2005, the Pius marching band has won many first-place awards in Class A, AA and recently AAA. The band is a Class A-size band, but at shows often moves up to larger classes to compete.
