Knights of Columbus Council 8376 at St. Ann Church, Marietta, and the members of the parish Military Support Ministry organized and ran a mid-summer, outdoor-indoor, dinner-and-a-movie event to raise money for two causes: “Wheelchairs for Veterans” and tuition support for seminarians becoming military chaplains.
Larry Moyer, Jim Kutzman and Deacon Tom Badger, all Knights, led the project planning and publicity, using the church narthex area to sell tickets, as well as to take donations. To illustrate the events’ goals, buckets were placed in wheelchairs where parishioners could place their donations, even if they were unable to attend.
Members of both organizations shared the dinner responsibilities, cooking a low country boil. Following dinner on July 21 came the family-friendly movie, “A Smile as Big as the Moon,” a Hallmark Hall of Fame production.
Forty-seven Knights participated and donated a total of 123 hours toward the project.
The event raised more than $3,200, which will be donated equally to the two causes.
