After going undefeated (7-0) and putting together the best record in their eight-team region for the 2010 season, the Pinecrest Academy girls were named Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) Region 1AAA tennis champions.

Sophomores Sarah Rocko and Irene Garcia, the number two and number three singles players, respectively, also went undefeated this season. The team’s number one singles player Kate Stecki and the number one doubles team of Erica Papa and Audrey Herd each had 6-1 records, while the number two doubles team of Tesi Saker and Adriana Dube had a record of 4-3.

Three of the Pinecrest players were named to the GISA 1AAA all region teams. Rocko placed second in the region for singles, and Herd and Papa also placed second for doubles. All three also competed in the state individual tournament held on April 19 in Macon. Rocko advanced to the second round of the tournament and lost to the defending state champion, Rebecca Shine of the Westminster Schools of Augusta 3-6, 0-6.

The Pinecrest team made its second trip to the state team tournament April 28, which was held at the Newman Tennis Center, augusta. Melissa Nevarez is the first-year head coach for the girls varsity team. The previous two years she coached the middle school tennis team at Pinecrest.
