Oct. 6 Festival To Benefit Amigos’ Work In Nicaragua

By ERIKA ANDERSON, Staff Writer | Published September 13, 2007

Popular Christian folk/pop band Caedmon’s Call will headline the Oct. 6 Amigos for Christ music festival, which will benefit the nonprofit organization’s missionary work for the poor of Nicaragua. The event will be held at the Suwanee Town Center Park and Amphitheatre from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

Along with sponsors Bryce Homes, Longhorn Steakhouse and Christian radio station 104.7 “The Fish,” the festival and family fun day will feature several bands including Florez, Starting Tuesday, Banks and Shane, The Transiztors and Palladium.

The event has free admission and will include arts and crafts, a variety of foods for purchase, moonwalks, a dunk tank, games for the whole family and more.

In addition, the Amigos for Christ Golf Classic will be held Friday, Oct. 5, at the Pine Isle Golf Resort at Lake Lanier Islands. This is a golf scramble, and benefits packages are offered for every level, designed to give sponsors optimal exposure the entire weekend.

All proceeds of the Amigos for Christ Music Festival and Golf Classic will be used to create opportunities for desperately poor families in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is the poorest Spanish-speaking country in the world and decades of civil war and corruption have taken an incredible toll on the way of life. These pre-existing social and economic problems were intensified when Hurricane Mitch roared through the country in October 1998. In Chinandega, where Amigos focuses their efforts, entire villages disappeared under volcanic mudslides. Thousands were left dead, and millions homeless. It was the worst hurricane the Western Hemisphere has seen in 200 years.

Amigos is based in Buford and holds trips throughout the spring and summer months.

All are invited to come and celebrate the courage and faith, despite tremendous odds, of the Nicaraguans and learn about Amigos’ work in Nicaragua, with its extensive array of programs in areas including agriculture, education and health care. The Suwanee Town Center Park is located at 370 Buford Highway at the corner of the park.
