St. Pius X High School girls were defeated by a formidable Milton High School, Alpharetta, May 2. The two-time state champions (2005 and 2006) scored five goals before Pius’ Sydney Smith scored the team’s first goal with 1:53 left in the first half. Angelique Plummer of Pius scored the team’s second goal with 16:03 remaining in the second half. But that is all Pius could manage against a strong Milton defense, which went on to win 15-2. Milton was led by the sister duo of Susannah and Marissa Hardy. Marissa, a freshman, finished with two goals and four assists, while her older sister Susannah, a junior, had three goals and one assist. Milton (17-1) moved on to the second round of the state playoffs, and St. Pius finished their season with a record of 13-5.

In the May 4 second round boys match against Westminster School, the Golden Lions lost a hard fought match in three sudden death overtimes by a score of 6-5. The two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and 2-2 at the end of the second period. St. Pius senior attacker Taylor King scored his third goal of the match to give St. Pius a 3-2 lead with 7:55 remaining in the third period. St. Pius went ahead 5-2 on fourth-period goals by midfielders Brian Melton and Eric Steinberg.

With just over 3:35 remaining in regulation, Westminster fought back to eventually tie the score up at 5-5 on a goal by senior Taylor Howard. The score remained that way through two overtimes, but with 1:42 remaining in the third overtime, Westminster scored the winning goal.
