Event To Focus On Building, Renovating Catholic Worship Spaces

The Archdiocese of Atlanta Liturgical Commission will present a one-day workshop, “Building or Renovating Space for Catholic Worship,” on Friday, Oct. 13, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The workshop, which is presented in cooperation with the Georgetown Center for Liturgy, will begin with registration from 8:30 to 9 a.m., and will be followed by morning prayer and introductions until 9:30 a.m.

The first speaker, Father Lawrence J. Madden, SJ, director of the Georgetown Center for Liturgy, and a theology instructor at Georgetown University, will present “Transformation: The Heart of the Matter” from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

From 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Father Richard Vosko will present “So You are Planning to Build or Renovate a Church.” Father Vosko has consulted on hundreds of worship environments throughout North America since 1970.

Lunch will be held from 12:15 p.m. until 1:15 p.m., when Marchita B. Mauck, a professor of art history and associate dean of the College of Art and Design at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, will present “Basic Concepts for Worship Spaces that Serve Liturgical and Devotional Needs.” Mauck has served as a liturgical design consultant on numerous renovation and new church projects throughout the country.

The final session will be a case study panel discussion of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Atlanta from 3-4:30 p.m. Panelists include William Jefferson Bush, director of liturgy and music at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Atlanta, Stephen Erspamer, a monk of St. Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, Ind., who works throughout the country as a liturgical consultant and artist for parishes and religious communities, and Tom Smith, a principal with CDH Partners in Marietta, who has served as a designer and project manager on a number of significant religious projects.

Cost for the conference is $75 per person. A discount is available for group reservations. Pre-payment is due by Oct. 1; registration at the door will be $100. Make checks payable to St. Joseph Catholic Church and mail to 87 Lacy Street NW, Marietta, GA 30060-1111.
