Marist Cross Country Teams Take Home State Honors

Published December 1, 2005

Marist School’s boys and girls cross country teams competed at the state finals in Carrollton on Saturday, Nov. 5, finishing in first and second place respectively.

The Marist boys team, led by senior John Whitcomb, ran their way to their fourth straight state championship. When front-runner senior Iain Turnbull became sick with mononucleosis in mid-October, his teammates stepped up to keep the tradition of winning alive. At the state meet Whitcomb finished fourth overall, followed by senior Jack Bourbonnais, junior Reilly De Yonker, freshman William Raffety, junior Jay Butler, sophomore William Watt, and junior David Mulcahy. It was Whitcomb’s third straight year finishing in the top 10 at state, a feat never before accomplished by a Marist boy.

The girls team had a gutsy second-place finish. Senior Amanda Reineck placed fourth overall with a time of 19:44, followed by teammates junior Kristy Hovis, junior Jonna Heldrich, sophomore Tess Gale, senior Kaiti Kelly, freshman Alex Hawkins, and senior Meredith Deming.
