YAM Sponsors Upcoming Chastain 5K Race

Published April 1, 2004

The archdiocesan Young Adult Ministry (YAM) is issuing an invitation to “get moving” to all runners, walkers and couch potatoes who want to add some variety to their lives. On Saturday, April 24, the group is sponsoring a fun run/walk for everyone from the avid runner to the leisurely stroller. The event offers a great chance to get moving, soak in some sunshine and scenery and greet springtime after a chilly winter. The course will be one loop around beautiful Chastain Park, starting at the tennis center near the intersection of Powers Ferry and West Wieuca roads. The 5K course is a “runner’s dream” with its fast declines and gradual inclines. The run will begin at 8 a.m., and the walk will begin at 8:05 a.m. This race is officially endorsed by Runner’s World and sponsored by Runner’s ID and The Big Peach Running Company, which opens this spring in Cherokee Plaza in Brookhaven.

An awards ceremony and plenty of tasty post-race snacks and beverages will immediately follow the race. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers overall and in each age category (under 14, 15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-59, 60-69 and over 70).

The entry fee, which includes a high-quality t-shirt, is $20 through Friday, April 16, or $25 on race day (t-shirts are not guaranteed to race day registrants). Priests, deacons and Religious can run for free. Number and race package pick-up begin at 6:30 a.m. on race day or at a pre-race pasta dinner on Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary School Cafeteria, 2855 Briarcliff Rd., Atlanta. The pasta dinner will be catered by International Catering and includes a menu of baked ziti with either a marinara sauce or a bolognaise sauce with meat and mushrooms, bread, salad, beverages and dessert. The cost is only $5, and everyone is encouraged to sign up for the dinner in advance when they register for the race. Dinners are not guaranteed for walk-ups.

Directions to Chastain Memorial Park, 135 West Wieuca Rd., NW, Atlanta, Ga.: Take I-285 to Roswell Rd exit. Go south on Roswell Rd. (inside the perimeter) for approximately 2 miles and take a right on West Wieuca Rd. Go through the 4-way stop, and the tennis center will soon be on the left.
