ATLANTA—The first archdiocesan Justice and Peace Exposition is drawing together some three dozen Atlanta organizations that all reflect the diversity of the church’s social teaching.

Sponsored by Justice and Peace Ministries of the archdiocese, the event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. It will be held at the Chancery, 2401 Lake Park Drive, Smyrna. Mass will be celebrated at noon.

From Georgia Interfaith Power & Light and Respect Life to Catholic Charities Atlanta and Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, representatives from the nonprofits will be available for the day.

“There will be something of interest for everyone,” said Leslye Colvin, program specialist for Justice & Peace Ministries. The program is open to everyone: clergy, religious sisters and brothers, ministry leaders, and laity.

The day is designed for all who want to know more about how they can get involved in the social ministries of the Catholic Church—for people who are already familiar with Catholic social teaching, as well as for those who are less familiar with the church’s teaching on the dignity of all people, from conception to natural death, but want to learn more.

People will “see how broad and diverse the umbrellas of Catholic social teaching is,” Colvin said.

Visitors are encouraged to speak with representatives from groups they may not be familiar with to learn more, she said.

Colvin said she hopes people “walk away with a greater appreciation of Catholic social teaching, which is at the church’s heart.”

During the day, there will be three screenings of “Rise and Dream,” about musically gifted young people in the Philippines who live in poverty. In spite of the obstacles, they learn to play traditional instruments for a major concert. Barclay Martin, the film’s musical director, will attend the screenings (10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m).

Another film to be shown is “Ending U.S.-sponsored Torture Forever,” a program put out by National Religious Campaign Against Torture
