Multimedia Youth Arts Contest Open For Entries
Published January 17, 2013
On behalf of the 2013 Multi-Media Youth Arts Contest, the archdiocesan Justice and Peace Ministry is now accepting submissions for this year’s contest. The competition, part of a nationwide contest, is sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the domestic, anti-poverty program of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
The theme for the contest this year, “Be a Disciple! Put Two Feet of Love in Action,” refers to two acts of love that “the conscience is called by social teaching to recognize and fulfill,” namely the “obligations of justice and charity in society” (Compendium of the Catholic Church, no. 83).
Any form of multimedia work on this theme is welcome. The deadline for all entries is Feb. 22.
The arts contest presents a medium whereby young people can acknowledge poverty in the world and offer a response to poverty through art. Students in grades 7-9 and 10-12 are encouraged to participate by exploring the issue of poverty in the United States and to create work that represents the Catholic response. Individuals and groups can enter.
All work to create the entry must be completed by the contestant or by the team of contestants. Each entry must be an original work of art and must have an official contest entry form attached to it.
Entries will be judged for the local contest, with local winners, and a single winner from each age group will be submitted to the national contest.
The national grand prize winner receives $500 plus a matching grant for an anti-poverty organization and a trip to a national conference. A student from the Archdiocese of Atlanta won an honorable mention at the national level in 2012.
CCHD seeks to promote an environment where Catholic social teaching and CCHD’s domestic mission to the poor is front and center. Through this contest organizers hope to generate a greater understanding about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in the face of this world’s injustices.
