Catholic radio had prominent spot in convention center

COLLEGE PARK–A crowd gathered around as Father Dave Dwyer, host of the radio show “Busted Halo,” interviewed speaker Kerri Caviezel at a SiriusXM Satellite Radio broadcast table during the Eucharistic Congress.

As the two talked about the Holy Spirit and the gifts of being Catholic, ushers gently controlled movement around the table where the interview was taking place.

Father Dwyer broadcast live from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6, in the main corridor of the Georgia International Convention Center with a variety of guests. He visited for more than 30 minutes with listeners afterward.

“Busted Halo” is aired on the Catholic Channel 129 on SiriusXM Radio weekdays at 7 p.m., with rebroadcasts at 1 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Lino Rulli, host of “The Catholic Guy” on SiriusXM, could barely make his way through the hallway without being approached by a listener or Atlanta friends.

Rulli said although SiriusXM has millions of paid subscribers, a lot of people have learned about his show and travels through social media.

“I feel like people in Atlanta are connected,” said Rulli.

Rulli was pulling double duty during his recent visit to Atlanta. He spoke during the “Revive” program Friday evening, June 5, and Saturday during the English track. He broadcast from the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Atlanta on Thursday, June 4, interviewing Father Desmond Drummer, Kari Beckman of Regina Caeli Academy, Deacon Dick Tolcher, director of prison ministries for the archdiocese, and Paula Gwynn Grant, director of communications for the archdiocese.

“The Catholic Guy” is broadcast weeknights from 5-7 p.m. and also rebroadcast at various times.

Rulli’s speaking presentations, like his shows, focus on being someone who is real, makes mistakes a lot and goes to confession. He said he feels God’s presence and the church in the people he meets, including during a recent encounter with Pope Francis.

While a photograph taken of the brief meeting between them looks as if the pope is enjoying conversation with Rulli, the reality was different.

Rulli intended to ask Pope Francis for prayers. “I just froze,” he said.

Having attended the congress for six years, Rulli also travels to Atlanta frequently to lend a hand in other ways, including serving as emcee for the Fabulous Fathers talent show to benefit Regina Caeli.

SiriusXM Radio was joined on “radio row” at the congress by other broadcasters, including Radio Inmaculada and Radio Kerigma, serving the Spanish-speaking community.
