An undermanned Our Lady of Mercy High School football team played with a lot of determination and heart despite a 28-0 loss to Eagles Landing Christian Academy (ELCA) of McDonough Sept. 26. Mercy managed to hold ELCA scoreless until the last two minutes of the second quarter when ELCA running back Van Jakes took it in from two yards out for the only first half touchdown. ELCA scored its remaining 21 points in the fourth quarter. Mercy generated 237 yards of total offense, 121 on the ground and 116 in the air, and its defense intercepted two passes and recovered two fumbles in the game’s first half, but they were unable to convert the turnovers to points. Mercy senior running back Jarrell Bankhead led his team in receiving and rushing with 91 and 109 yards, respectively. Mercy (1-3) travels to Roswell to play Fellowship Christian School (2-3) Friday, Oct. 3.

Blessed Trinity High School, Roswell, extended its winning streak to four as the team routed Avondale High School 62-13 Sept. 26. The team is averaging 43.5 points per game this season, and no opponent has scored more than 15 points on its defense. Blessed Trinity senior running back Sam Burkhalter had nine carries for 132 yards and one touchdown of 57 yards. Senior quarterback Kohl Hegetschweiler completed nine of 11 passes for 165 yards and threw three touchdown passes. Running backs Bruce Johnson and Kyle Denis and wide receivers Court Kasten and Jake Skole also scored one or more touchdowns in the game. Blessed Trinity (4-0) plays host to Greater Atlanta Christian School (0-4) of Norcross, Friday, Oct. 3.

Pinecrest Academy, Cumming, climbed back into the win column with a 37-22 victory over Dawson Street Academy Sept. 26. Junior running backs Kevin Metz and Michael Cassandra had two touchdowns apiece. Sophomore kicker Rico Garcia added three field goals of 31, 34 and 37 yards and four points-after touchdown. Pinecrest (2-2-1) faces Trinity Christian School (0-5) of Dublin, Friday, Oct. 3.

St. Pius X High School, Atlanta, is the second of two archdiocesan schools that remain undefeated after a 35-7 win over Therell High School Sept. 27. Senior tailback Brendonn Jones had four carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while junior fullback Cole Moon had 10 carries for 92 yards and one touchdown. Defensive end Michael Wess led the defense with nine tackles, and defensive tackle Andrew Butler was right behind him with eight. St. Pius had 336 total offensive yards, the second highest of its season. St. Pius (5-0) will attempt to make it six in a row on homecoming as the team faces North Atlanta High School (4-1), Friday, Oct. 3.
