After summer travel, Atlanta Boy Choir preparing for new season

Published September 4, 2014

ATLANTA—The Atlanta Boy Choir recently returned from travels to Poland and the Czech Republic, where the group was invited to participate in the honoring of Pope John Paul II’s being elevated to sainthood. The choir sang at St. Pope John Paul’s home church in Krakow as well as at the Great Cathedral of St. John in Warsaw.

The choir, established 57 years ago by current director Fletcher Wolfe, sings all over the world and is recognized globally. The choir is based in Druid Hills opposite Olmsted Park where choir members frequently can be seen playing soccer.

Some of the more than 8,000 boys who were once choir members have moved on to careers in entertainment. Among those who participated as members of this musical organization include Tony Award–winning actor Shuler Hensley; Emmy and Golden Globe Award–winning Dwayne Shattuck, producer of the television series “Mad Men”; Metropolitan Opera star Morris Robinson; American Idol first runner-up Justin Guarini; and movie composer Drew Silverstein.

Members of the choir come from every background and social status to join the choir. Each year the choir accepts boys ages 6-13 who have unchanged voices. Those who wish to try out may do so by calling the choir at 404-378-0064 or by sending an email to: info@atlantaboychoir.org. The auditions are simple—every boy who can sing on pitch and has a pleasant voice is invited to take part.
