Walter Reeves to speak at Christ Child Society benefit

Published April 3, 2014

ATLANTA—The Christ Child Society of Atlanta will present “Dancing in the Garden with Walter Reeves” Saturday, April 26, with total proceeds going to fund its programs for children and mothers in need.

The event features Georgia’s premier gardener, Walter Reeves, as luncheon speaker. The lunch will be at the Capital City Club—Brookhaven, 53 W. Brookhaven Drive, in Atlanta. The luncheon also includes a silent auction, shopping through the “Garden of Vendors” and demonstrations beginning at 10 a.m.

Reeves is the host of “The Lawn and Garden Show” on WSB radio and “Your Southern Garden” on GPTV.

Christ Child Society of Atlanta is 10 years old this year and works to challenge poverty by distributing layettes of baby care items to mothers in need, volunteering to provide day care at Sheltering Grace Ministries so that homeless mothers can go to job interviews or receive training, and by rocking infants at Grady Hospital’s special care nursery.

The group also maintains an outdoor garden classroom for students at the Elaine Clark Center for Exceptional Children in Chamblee.

Reservations are required for the luncheon. Tickets are $50 per person, and available by visiting www.christchildatlanta.org. Visitors to the site may also pledge endowment support of the layette and garden upkeep programs.

Society member Hendie Salton said that tickets would be available through April 23, unless sold out before.

Mary Virginia Merrick founded the National Christ Child Society in 1887 in Washington D.C. Despite being paralyzed in an accident before the age of 13, Merrick devoted her life to ministering to the poor while caring for six younger siblings on her own.
