St. Pius drama students excel

ATLANTA—Two students from St. Pius X High School’s Advanced Drama Company, directed by Tracey Buot, recently won two state competitions.   

Logan Yates took home first place at the state English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare competition and will be competing at the national level in New York City on April 24. Logan won a trip to New York City to see the bright lights of Broadway and the other sights of the city.   

Logan Yates and Molly Pitra of the Advanced Drama Company at St. Pius X High School have moved forward in national drama competitions.

The winner of the national competition receives a British American Drama Academy Midsummer Conservatory Program in England. The second and third place winners receive a place at the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp and $1,000, respectively.    

Molly Pitra earned the top prize at the state Poetry Out Loud competition and will compete at the national Poetry Out Loud competition on May 9 in Washington D.C.  

Molly won a cash prize of $200 for herself and $500 for St. Pius X High School’s program, in addition to the trip to the nation’s capital.   

Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation competition that is supported by the National Endowment of the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. A total of $50,000 in awards and school/organizational stipends will be given at the finals, including a $20,000 award for the national champion, $10,000 for 2nd place, $5,000 for 3rd place and $1,000 for 4th-9th places.
