Grey Nuns’ President, 25 Sisters To Attend Sept. 1 Mass

Published July 22, 2010

The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart will return to Atlanta Sept. 1 to remember, celebrate and give thanks for their 73 years of ministry in the archdiocese.

Sister Julia Lanigan, president of the Grey Nuns, and 25 sisters who served in the archdiocese will attend a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King.

The celebration is called “Journey of Love, Journey of Blessings.”

The Grey Nuns arrived in Atlanta in 1937 to assist in the establishment of Christ the King School. In the spring of 2010, Sister Sally White, an Atlanta native and the last Grey Nun serving in active ministry in North Georgia, retired to the congregation’s motherhouse in Yardley, Pa.

In the 73 years, Grey Nuns served in diverse ministries in the archdiocese, including education, health care, social work and various administrative posts. The September Mass will provide an opportunity for the sisters to express thanksgiving for the blessings they received in their years of Georgia ministry.

Father Frank McNamee, Cathedral pastor, will concelebrate the Mass and Msgr. Richard Lopez will serve as homilist. A reception will follow in Kenny Hall.

Grey Nuns who will be attending the Mass (followed by their religious names) include: Sister Betty Bagen (Daniel Marie); Sister Carol Bartol (Mary of the Visitation); Sister Mary Charlotte Barton; Sister Rosalie Bertell (Rosalie of the Sacred Heart); Sister Anne Boyer (Mary Mark); Sister Rose Mary Cauley (Mary de Montfort); Sister Joan Marie Daly (Joseph Marie); Sister Mary Joan Elias; Sister Mary Lee Farrell (John Michael); Sister Dawn Gear (John Elizabeth); Sister Barbara Harrington (Robert Francis), Sister Mary Ellen Hoen (Catherine Paul), Sister Mary Karen Kelly; Sister Jean Liston (Anne Louise); Sister Mary Elizabeth Looby; Sister John Helen Main; Sister Ann McKee (Ann of the Sacred Heart); Sister Josephine Patti (Joseph Therese); Sister Kathleen Purser (Ann Gerald); Sister Mary Dee Smith (Peter Michael); Sister Eileen Spanier; Sister Sheila Stone (Mary of Providence); Sister Mary Susan Thomas; and Sister Sally White (Francis Maureen).

“We want all who knew us over the years to come and celebrate with us,” said Sister Dawn Gear, who served in the archdiocese for 26 years and now serves on the Leadership Council of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart.

“We’re looking forward to seeing our friends, co-workers and students again and hope they will join us on our very special day.”
