The Monastery of the Holy Spirit will present the University of Georgia Collegium Musicum and Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Mitos Andaya, in “A Lenten Meditation for Passion Sunday,” a choral concert of sacred classical music in the Abbey Church, on Sunday, March 28, at 4 p.m. The public is invited.

The groups will perform “The Lamentations of Jeremiah I and II,” by 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis and “Seven Last Words From the Cross,” by contemporary Scottish composer James MacMillan.

“The Lamentations of Jeremiah” are polyphonic settings considered to be very personal compositions of the composer. Tallis was Catholic, but as he served in the employ of four monarchs (Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth I), he also composed works for the Anglican ritual. The settings of these works conclude with the exclamation, “Jerusalem convertere ad Dominum Deum tuum,” a plea to Jerusalem to turn to the Lord.

The piece “Seven Last Words From the Cross” is composer MacMillan’s first major choral work, composed for mixed voices and strings. MacMillan draws upon complementary texts, including the Palm Sunday exclamation, Good Friday responses, as well as Catholic ceremony and plainchant. The work combines a variety of compositional styles to provide the opportunity for reflection and meditation.

The concert will also include some short instrumental pieces.

General admission is free, but free will offerings for the monastery are accepted. The monastery gift shop will be open prior to the concert. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
