The last time a St. Pius X High School varsity football team went over to Marist School and came back with a victory, Hank Aaron had hit his 715th home run to surpass Babe Ruth, People magazine debuted and the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” movie was released. The year was 1974.
On Friday, Aug. 28, St. Pius returned from Marist with a 28-3 victory for the first time in 35 years. It was also a back-to-back win for Pius, who beat Marist at home in 2008.
St. Pius sophomore quarterback Trey White led the offensive assault with 115 yards rushing and 94 yards passing. Senior Alden Homrich was on the receiving end of two first-half touchdown catches to help his team take a 14-3 lead at halftime. St. Pius scored its two second-half touchdowns on runs by George Kennedy in the third quarter and Geno Smith in the fourth quarter.
The St. Pius defense held Marist to 154 total yards (123 rushing and 31 passing). Marist scored its only points of the game on a 27-yard field goal by Justin Moore.
Both teams are at home Friday, Sept. 4, as Marist faces Stone Mountain High School and St. Pius takes on Greater Atlanta Christian.
