Two teams lost their chance at a perfect season last weekend—high school basketball’s Blessed Trinity Titans and professional football’s New England Patriots. On the eve of Super Bowl XLII, Saturday, Feb. 2, Marist School ended Blessed Trinity’s 22-0 winning streak with a 61-55 victory on the War Eagles’ court. It was Blessed Trinity’s first loss since their season began back on Nov. 20, 2007. Blessed Trinity averaged nearly 70 points per game for the month of January, but 55 points is the team’s third lowest scoring output of the season.

The two teams were tied at halftime 25-25. With 4:30 left in the third period Blessed Trinity held a four-point lead, but the second half was a game of missed opportunities for the Titans. Marist was 19 of 21 from the foul line, while Blessed Trinity was only 5 of 17. Junior forward Arris Brundidge led all Blessed Trinity scorers with 17 points. Speaking about his team’s victory second-year Marist head coach Greg McClaire said, “Yes it was a very good win. They are a good squad and Coach (Marks) has them believing. They were not 22-0 by accident. I think our players are kind of hooked on making it to the state tournament. I’d like my guys to taste the state tournament. I’m very proud of their effort, but we can play much better.”
