    Cross memorial at Lyke House Newman Center honors slain student  

    A granite cross now stands in the parking lot of the Lyke House Newman Center where Jatonne Sterling was killed. Family and scores of students from Clark Atlanta University gathered at the Catholic center at the Atlanta University Center on Nov. 16 to remember him.

    On the cover of the Nov. 28, 1963 issue of The Georgia Bulletin, in its inaugural year, Archbishop Paul Hallinan offered prayer following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He wrote, “John F. Kennedy was a man, a husband, a father, a son, a brother. The entire human family mourns his death.”

    Giving Tuesday is Nov. 28. The initiative, started in 2012, aims to celebrate generosity by spotlighting the work of nonprofits. #iGiveCatholic is part of the Giving Tuesday tradition. The day makes it easy to support one or more of the 96 Atlanta Catholic organizations participating.

    Students crowded each other to shake the hand of Hilbert Margol, a 99-year-old Jewish WW II veteran who helped liberate a concentration camp, after his address to the Veterans Day assembly at St. Pius X High School.

    In October 1998, Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church, east of Atlanta, was dedicated to serve the region’s Ukrainian immigrant community. There are about 200 members of the church, half of them with ties to Ukraine.

    Marist School’s first lay president centers year around students, teachers 

    Masses, sporting events and enthusiastic assemblies have filled the calendar of J.D. Childs, the new president of Marist School. “Teachers and students are the most important folks at Marist School,” said Childs. “So my hope for my first year as president surrounds them.” He is the first lay president of Marist in the school’s 122-year history.
