  • At the Catholic Center at the University of Georgia, a statue of St. Francis of Assisi greets visitors. Inside, the intimate chapel features beautiful stained glass and warm, rustic pews and walls. It is one of six pilgrimage sites in the archdiocese for the Year of St. Francis.
  • Icons of the holy family cradle the altar at St. Francis of Assisi in Cartersville and the windows surrounding the sanctuary depict images based on the "Canticle of the Sun," the prayer attributed to St. Francis that praises God through elements of creation.
  • Founded in 1903, St. Anthony of Padua was the third Catholic community established in what is now the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Its present sanctuary dates to 1924. Inside, the historic sanctuary is filled with stained glass windows that stand out against the white walls.
  • St. Francis of Assisi in Blairsville sits between the mountains of North Georgia. Father Cong Nguyen, who became pastor in July 2025, said the pilgrimage destination gives visitors an opportunity to go beyond admiring the scenery, sharing that “pilgrims can come not only to visit a beautiful place, but to deepen their relationship with Christ.”
  • To the side of the St. Philip Benizi Church is a lush garden full of native plants that allow for an active ecosystem of animals to reside. During the Easter season this space is used for a sunrise Mass outdoors.

Six churches open their doors for the Jubilee Year of Saint Francis

Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., has designated six churches across the Archdiocese of Atlanta as pilgrimage sites for the Jubilee Year of St. Francis of Assisi.
