Atlanta Hosts Image Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe

Published March 4, 2004

For the first time since 1994, an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will travel to parishes, homes and abortion mills in the Atlanta area.

The image is one of four life-size copies made from the original supernatural picture in Mexico to journey around the world on a peace mission. It is believed that all four replicas have brought conversions, healings, elimination of abortions and miracles.

The last time one of the images visited Atlanta was in 1994, when Archbishop John F. Donoghue consecrated the entire archdiocese to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

In 1531, Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in present-day Mexico City. She asked him to build a church on the spot where she stood and sent him to the bishop to make her request known.

However, the bishop, skeptical of Juan Diego’s claim, asked him for proof. When Juan Diego made his way again to the top of the hill, there he found brilliant Castillian roses blooming in spite of the cold. Juan Diego dutifully gathered up the roses in his tilma, or poncho, to take to the bishop.

In the bishop’s presence, he opened his tilma, and as the roses cascaded to floor, an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on his cloak, just as Juan Diego had described her—a young woman with the features of a mestiza, a mixture of Spanish and Indian blood. All around her are shafts of light in rainbow colors, bathing the stone, earth and plants around her.

In two weeks the church was built. Today the image continued to inspire awe in those who contemplate it.
