CSJ Sister Anne Souto dies

ST. LOUIS—Sister Anne Carlos Souto of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Louis Province, died Feb. 18 in St. Louis, Missouri.
The daughter of Manuel Gonzales and Viola Fullerton Souto, she was born on May 17, 1927, in Mobile, Alabama. Sister Souto entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1947, making her final profession on Aug. 15, 1953. She had been a sister for more than 67 years.
She began teaching in 1950 at St. Cecilia Grade School in St. Louis. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1956. Sister Souto came to teach at St. Joseph School, Marietta, in 1960. She remained at St. Joseph for seven years.
After serving as a teacher in Kansas City and Mobile, Sister Souto earned a master’s in special education from the University of South Alabama and returned to the Archdiocese of Atlanta, where she served as a teacher at the Village of St. Joseph.
Sister Souto also worked at Marian Manor and for the Knights of Columbus in Atlanta. In 1991, she began serving as an instructional aide at DeKalb County Mental Retardation Service Center. Sister Souto said her happiest years were those spent teaching the handicapped adults and children at the center.
Officially retired since 1997, Sister Souto resided at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, where she continued to volunteer. She worked in the center’s Soc Shop, and took appointment reminder slips to other residents.
She had a lifelong love of fishing, a pastime from her childhood. Sister Souto’s older sister, Mary Manuela, was also a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Mary Manuela died in 2009.
A funeral Mass for Sister Souto was celebrated Feb. 24 at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Grace Souto of Eatonton, and a sister-in-law, Jacquelyn Souto of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
