Meet the 2021 class of deacons

ATLANTA–On Feb. 6, Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., ordained six permanent deacons and one transitional deacon.

Avery Edward Daniel, Transitional Deacon

Age: 28

Place of Birth: Stone Mountain.

Education: Pontifical College Josephinum (Columbus, Ohio), B.A. in humanities (magna cum laude). Class of 2015. Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome, Italy), baccalaureate in sacred theology (magna cum laude). Class of 2019.

Work experience: He entered the seminary at 19, after a year of college and has been in seminary formation for eight years. The deacon has had a wide variety of parish and other assignments, including being a tour guide at the Catacombs of St. Callixtus in Rome, and teaching Confirmation prep for Italian sixth graders in the Roman suburbs.

Hobbies and interests: Drumming, strength training, boxing, golf and many others.

Ministries of interest: Eastern Rite liturgy, high school chaplaincy, university chaplaincy, ministry to other cultures in the archdiocese, military chaplaincy, counseling, spiritual direction.

Additional languages: Spanish, Italian and German.

Parish assignment: St. Peter Chanel, Roswell.

The six men ordained to the permanent diaconate are:

Orlando Caicedo Mora

Age: 64

Place of Birth: Bogota, Colombia.

Family: He and wife Martha Ligia Manrique have been married for 42 years. They have a daughter, Carolina; two sons, David Orlando and Ivan Dario; and two granddaughters.

Education: Universidad Externado de Colombia, in Bogota, Colombia, 1976–1980, Major was business administration.

Work experience: From the onset of his professional career, the deacon worked in the business administration field for three banking institutions in Colombia for 15 years–Banco Internacional, Banco Colpatria and Banco del Comercio. Positions included serving as the director of methods and organization department, national operation supervisor and regional manager. He now has his own business in landscape services.

Hobbies and interests: He has always enjoyed participating in different sports and considers sports his entertainment as well. He enjoys being outside and visiting parks and the mountains.

Ministries of interest: Pastoral and formation for the community. The deacon has volunteered for 30 years in Atlanta in support of various Hispanic ministries.

Additional language: Spanish.

Parish Assignment: Holy Spirit, Atlanta.

John Campbell

Age: 60

Place of Birth: Boston, Massachusetts.

Family: He and wife Julie McIntyre Campbell have been married for 32 years. They have two sons, John and Patrick.

Education: Century University in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a B.S. in business administration (honors).

Work experience: He has worked in the electronics field, specifically in the communications/telecommunications arena, for the past 40 years. Roles have included sales, director of systems engineering/customer service and systems engineering. Currently, he is senior systems engineer with Motorola Solutions, working with public safety organizations.

Hobbies and interests: Running, reading, working on vehicles (all types) and sports.

Ministries of interest: Working with the homeless, first responders.

Parish assignment: Good Shepherd, Cumming.

Henry Obilo Ohaya

Age: 52

Place of Birth: Amaigbo, Nigeria.

Family: He and wife Ihuoma have been married for 15 years. They have two daughters, Amarachi and Akunna, and a son, Arinze.

Education: Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, University of Benin, Nigeria (1990). Master’s in Public Administration, University of Lagos, Nigeria (1997). Doctor of Pharmacy degree, Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Atlanta (2007).

Work experience: Operated own pharmacy business in Nigeria for seven years before emigrating to the United States. Practiced as a pharmacist in retail and clinical settings in Georgia for 21 years. Currently a practicing pharmacist and pharmacy manager with the Kroger Company.

Hobbies and interests: Coaching youth soccer and watching competitive sports. Traveling and experiencing different cultures. Reading inspirational books, journaling, teaching and time with family and friends.

Ministries of interest: Marriage and family and pastoral care of the sick.

Additional languages: Ibo and Yoruba.

Parish assignment: St. Philip Benizi, Jonesboro.

David Stenzel

Age: 57

Place of Birth: Streator, Illinois.

Family: He and wife, Sharon, have been married for 28 years. They have one son, Matthew.

Education: Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in military science from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois. Master of Business Administration from Benedictine University, Lisle, Illinois.

Work experience: Infantry officer in the United States Army, 1985-1989. He has worked as a technology consultant and project manager at Electronic Data Systems, Accenture and Avanade.

Since 2010, he has worked in learning and development for Avanade, developing curricula and certification programs for employees.

Hobbies and interests: Reading, sports, history, pottery.

Ministries of interest: Social justice, pastoral care and spiritual direction. The deacon has worked with the Ignatian Spirituality Project, Fortunate and Faithful Families and other ministries.

Parish assignment: Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Atlanta.

Carl Antonius Taylor

Age: 60

Place of Birth: Columbus, Mississippi.

Family: Married to wife Angela for 37 years. They have a son and daughter Carl Ashley and Erica. They have four grandchildren: Gianna, Isaiah, Savannah and Aliyah.

Education: Lane Technical High School, Chicago, Illinois. Morehouse College, Atlanta.

Work experience: For the past 24 years, he has been a realtor and small business owner. The deacon previously worked for 12 years at The Coca-Cola Company headquarters as manager of the television studios, presentation/multimedia graphics and conference facilities and production crew for major events.

Hobbies and interests:  Avid reader of nonfiction, collector of limited edition nostalgic paintings by African American artists, spending time with grandchildren, family genealogist.

Ministries of interest: Bridge Ministry (improving relationships between racial groups), elderly care and visitation, jail ministry, parochial school of religion and St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Additional language: Continuing study of Spanish. He asks for prayers that his work leads to improved proficiency and pronunciation.

Parish assignment: St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, Douglasville.

Christopher George Waken

Age: 63

Place of Birth: Enid, Oklahoma.

Family: Married to Pamela A. Waken for 39 years. They have a daughter, Brittany, and son, Matthew and his wife Katherine. They have a new grandson, Noah. The deacon’s father-in-law is Gus Zechel.

Education: B.A. in management, Oklahoma State University.

Work experience: He is a corporate accounts executive for the Foodservice Division of Tyson Foods, Springdale, Arkansas.

Hobbies and interests:  Enjoys family time, running, sailing.

Ministries of interest:  “Wherever the Lord guides me,” said the deacon. He has past experience with confirmation catechism, homebound ministry and St. Francis Table.

Parish Assignment:  Mary Our Queen, Peachtree Corners.
