Mercy has back-to-back volleyball victories

FAYETTEVILLE—In the first of two volleyball matches Sept. 14, Our Lady of Mercy High School defeated Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High 2-0 (25-8, 25-9) in the first match ever held between the two teams. Junior Tamia Hall led Mercy with five kills and one block. Senior Vanessa Smith had three kills and eight aces. Senior Eboni Winston dished out 15 assists.

In Our Lady of Mercy’s second match, they defeated Pinecrest Academy 2-1 (25-16, 22-25, 16-14). Keelia Jordan, Hall and Winston led the way with nine, six and three kills, respectively. Winston also had 24 assists. Senior libero Hope Walker had 13 digs.

Prior to the match with Pinecrest, a brief ceremony to recognize Mercy’s six seniors took place. They included Smith, Walker, Winston, Rachel Black, Stephanie Bodkin and Jessica Knowles. Each senior was presented with flowers and candy from their underclassmen teammates and a plaque from coach Bill Schmitz. Entering the week of Sept. 17, Mercy had an overall record of 13-8.
