FAYETTEVILLE—Drama students at Our Lady of Mercy High School won the first runner-up award at the Georgia High School Association’s (GHSA) One Act Play State Championship Nov. 5 in Macon.

The OLM cast and crew of 27 students took the prize for their production of “Twelve Angry Jurors.”

They won in the Class A private school category, under the leadership of drama instructor Jade Lambert-Smith. Lakeview Academy took the top prize.

OLM qualified for the competition by winning the Region 5A contest held Oct. 29 at the Galloway School in Atlanta.

“They just did a really awesome job,” said Lambert-Smith. “We actually left after the performance. I went back just to get the feedback, and we won.”

The judges commended OLM for tackling a strong subject and for the work of both cast and crew.

At the regional competition, Michael Clemens, who played Juror Eight, won best actor.

However, just prior to the state GHSA championship, Clemens became ill. Actress Abrianna Belvedere stepped in to rehearse and adapt the part for competition.

“You would’ve thought we’d won the Oscar,” said Lambert-Smith. “They were beaming. I’m so honored to work with them. I have a great group of young actors.”

OLM will present “Seussical the Musical,” March 23-25 at the Fayetteville school.
