ATLANTA—Two noted speakers who have been leaders and teachers in the Catholic charismatic renewal nationally over the past 30 to 40 years are giving talks and leading worship at the Atlanta 2014 Catholic Charismatic Conference.
Bishop Sam Jacobs, bishop-emeritus of Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana, and Sister Ann Shields, of the Servants of God’s Love congregation, will lead the program at the conference. It will be held Oct. 24 and 25 at St. Pius X High School, 2674 Johnson Road, NE, Atlanta.
Sister Ann, who has written numerous books on spirituality, intercession, and the charisms of the Holy Spirit, will lead a general session at 7:40 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, which will be followed by a Eucharistic adoration and healing service led by Father Tim Hepburn, vocations director of the archdiocese. She will also give two presentations at 11 a.m. and at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Bishop Jacobs, a vibrant speaker who led the National Service Committee of the Catholic charismatic renewal before being made a bishop, will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, speak at 1:15 p.m., and lead a closing session at 3:20 p.m. with Father Hepburn.
The theme of the conference is “Awaken God’s Gifts Within: Be Fruitful, Be Bold and Be Victorious.” In preparation for the 50th jubilee in 2017 of the Catholic charismatic renewal, the National Service Committee has called for this year to be focused as a “year of charisms and grace for the Church.”
The conference begins on Friday evening at 7 p.m. with praise and worship and ends at 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, the conference begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Throughout both days, praise and worship will be led by the Alleluia Music Ministry. Deacon Keith Kolodziej, who serves at St. Peter Chanel Church, Roswell, will introduce the program and its speakers and also give a witness on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m.
An early bird registration fee of $25 will be offered until Sept. 15. After Sept. 15, the price is $30. The cost includes lunch on Saturday. All are invited to register and attend.
Bishop Jacobs has been recently re-elected to the National Service Committee after a 21-year absence. He formerly served as a board member for Cross Catholic Outreach and is now an advisor. Sister Ann is an internationally known conference and retreat speaker and hosts the popular daily radio program “Food for the Journey.” Servants of God’s Love is a charismatic religious community established in the Diocese of Lansing, Michigan.
