Archbishop Addresses Marist Class

Published November 6, 2008

Archbishop Gregory spoke to students in Marist Father Joel Konzen’s leadership seminar on Oct. 21, answering their questions about his role models, leadership qualities and opinions on the upcoming election.

“The primary issue has to be the respect for life,” he said in regard to voting.

During the class, he recalled growing up during the civil rights era and meeting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as the “life-changing” experience of living in Rome while getting his doctorate. He also named two priests in his home parish as his role models.

“A bishop has to be a good coach and make sure our colleagues are on the same team,” he said when asked about mentoring priests. “I speak to them about courage, forgiveness, and mercy. I have to love them, and I have to model that acceptance.”
