Marist Captures First State Softball Title
Published October 30, 2008
Marist captured its first state championship in softball with a 2-0 victory over Whitewater High School of Fayetteville Oct. 25. In a real defensive battle, Marist pitcher Lori Spingola pitched a one hitter as her teammates provided solid defense behind her. Offensively, senior second baseman Dana Middleton got things started by doubling to left field, and when the Whitewater left fielder misplayed the ball, Marist center fielder Tesia Davis was able to score the initial run from first base. Middleton would eventually score the second run on an infield hit by third baseman Kelsey Sharp.
Mike Trapani, Marist head coach for the past nine years, said, “This has been an exceptional group of athletes from the time they entered Marist. We have been fortunate to keep many of them in the program over the last few years. This win was a testimony to their hard work and dedication over that time.” Coach Trapani added, “It was also a most gratifying experience having one of my brothers (assistant coach Craig) at my side, my other brother in the stands with my wife and parents, and my senior daughter (Mary) on the field catching. It was a great day for my family along with the entire Marist community.”
