Nine Receive Graduate Theology Degrees Through Jesuit Extension Program

Nine students from the Archdiocese of Atlanta who have attended the Spring Hill College Atlanta extension site received their master of theological studies from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., on Sunday, May 14.

The nine and their parishes are: John Bott, St. Brigid Church, Alpharetta; Dot Danchetz, Good Shepherd Church, Cumming; John Harvey, St. Andrew Church, Roswell; Karen Morrison, Good Shepherd Church, Cumming; Jeff Mullins, Sacred Heart Church, Atlanta; Vionette Ruberte, Centro Católico del Espíritu Santo, Atlanta; Martha Smith, St. Jude Church, Atlanta; Christy Wallace, St. Francis de Sales Church, Mableton; and Peggy White, All Saints Church, Dunwoody. All students attended classes at the Atlanta extension site located at Holy Spirit Church.

Graduates were invited to a retreat prior to graduation conducted by Dr. Tim Carmody, director of graduate theology. Students from the Atlanta site joined students from Mobile and the extension sites in Jackson, Miss., and Birmingham, Ala., for a time of reflection and prayer prior to graduation activities.

Spring Hill College, the Jesuit College of the South, has provided an extension site in Atlanta at Holy Spirit Church since 1997. Spring Hill offers a variety of degree programs in theological study aimed primarily at the non-traditional student. The program offers a contemporary, ecumenical perspective in theology from the Catholic tradition. Courses provide the challenge of serious theological reflection for laymen and women as well as clergy and Religious. The program is appropriate for preparation for pastoral ministry or religious education, as well as continuing education or as a journey in personal enrichment.

Each year Spring Hill offers four Saturday courses and two Tuesday evening courses. Each course is offered for undergraduate or graduate credit with separate and distinct requirements for each level. The cost per credit is $242. Additional courses are offered in the summer through the Atlanta Institute of Christian Spirituality.
