Archdiocesan Festival Choir To Sing Schubert Mass

Published May 11, 2006

The Archdiocesan Festival Choir will perform Saturday, May 20, at 8 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 1350 Hearst Drive, NE.

This is the fourth season for the choir, which is made up of over 70 members representing more than 30 parishes in the archdiocese.

The choir will be performing Schubert’s “Mass in G” with a professional chamber orchestra. Vocal soloists for the Schubert piece will be Sharon Stephenson, soprano, James Bell, tenor, and W. Dwight Coleman, baritone. The choir will also perform Gorecki’s “Ave Maria,” “Four Motets” by Duruflé, and a group of African-American spirituals.

The conductors for the performance are music directors from four parishes—J. Wayne Baughman from St. Benedict Church, Duluth; John Brandt from Corpus Christi Church, Stone Mountain; Kevin Culver from the Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta; and Linda Morgan from Mary Our Queen Church, Norcross.

Members of the choir are looking forward to performing in the new sanctuary at Our Lady of the Assumption, which was dedicated in November 2005 and features beautiful, traditional Gothic-style architecture and excellent acoustics. The church is located in the Brookhaven area of Atlanta near Oglethorpe University.

Tickets are available from Festival Choir members for a requested $10 donation or by calling (404) 233-2145, ext. 423. Tickets may also be reserved by e-mail at festchoir@yahoo.com. Those requesting tickets should include name, e-mail address and number of tickets needed.

The Festival Choir will also be singing at the closing Mass of the Eucharistic Congress Saturday, June 17, at the Georgia International Convention Center.
