Martin Luther King Weekend Celebration set for Jan. 15-18

ATLANTA—The 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend Celebration, sponsored by the Office for Black Catholic Ministry of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, will be held Jan. 15-18. Events include a night of service, Eucharistic celebration and youth celebration. All are invited to attend.

The weekend begins with the young adult night of service on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m., at the Lyke House, the Catholic Center at the Atlanta University Center, 809 Beckwith St., SW, Atlanta. Young adults are invited to join this event where hygiene kits will be assembled for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Georgia to distribute to those in need.

The Mass commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 48 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, SW, in Atlanta. Father Desmond Drummer, parochial vicar at St. Peter Chanel Church, Roswell, will be the homilist.

Being honored this year for their service are Monica Plew of St. Brendan the Navigator Church, Cumming, and Charles O. Prejean, Sr., director of the Office for Black Catholic Ministry.

A youth celebration is set for Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter Claver Regional School, 2560 Tilson Road, Decatur.

The weekend events will recognize the work and legacy of Prejean, who is retiring at the end of January.
