Any athlete will tell you it is no fun to lose, and a team never gets used to losing. In a season where wins are hard to come by, players have to approach each game with enthusiasm and a commitment to prevail. Another opportunity for this kind of victory presented itself to Our Lady of Mercy High School Oct. 2 as the Lady Bobcats took on Roswell’s Fellowship Christian High School (11-5).

The Lady Bobcats fell behind early as Fellowhip Christian scored six runs in the first inning and seven in the second. Mercy could have thrown in the towel, but they didn’t give up. They held Fellowship Christian scoreless during the third and fourth innings.

Candice Singh, playing in her first year, provided improved pitching and defense and was backed up by outstanding play in the field by senior shortstop Amanda Keuler. Centerfielder Ellen Super and Keuler are the only two Lady Bobcats who have played all four years, so a lack of experience factors into the team’s play.

In the top of the fifth, Fellowship Christian added six more runs. As Mercy came up for their last at bat, they knew that overcoming a 19-run deficit might be an insurmountable task, but at least they could play for pride and try to avoid the shutout.

Second-year player and catcher Re’Yawna Sharpe started things off with a double. “Things were starting to get intense,” said Sharpe describing her last at bat, an indication that there was no quitting among the Lady Bobcats. Second baseman Amaka Agulue also provided a double, which allowed Sharpe to score Mercy’s first run. Agulue stole third and eventually scored the second and final run on a wild pitch. Mercy went down in defeat 19-2, and they finish the regular season with an overall record of 0-7. Following the game, Agulue, who had the RBI double, said, “I never gave up. I didn’t think winning was possible, but I wanted to see us score something.”
