Mortarboards To Fly In May For Class Of 2013

ATLANTA—Seven Catholic high schools will hold their commencement exercises in May and six have announced their 2013 valedictorians and salutatorians. The graduations are listed below.

Archdiocesan High Schools

St. Pius X High School, Atlanta

The commencement ceremony for St. Pius X High School, Atlanta, will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 9:30 a.m. at the Cobb Energy Centre. Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory and Dr. Diane Starkovich, superintendent of Catholic schools, will attend the graduation. Father Bryan Small, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Decatur, and an alumnus of St. Pius, will be a special guest at the ceremony.

The school community will celebrate the baccalaureate Mass for the 241 members of the class of 2013 at St. Brigid Church, Johns Creek, on Thursday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Luis R. Zarama, auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese, is the celebrant.

David Spratte of Decatur, the son of Brad and Deone Spratte, is the class valedictorian. He is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Atlanta. Barbara Anne Kozee of Lawrenceville, the daughter of Casey Kozee, is the class salutatorian. Her family attends St. Lawrence Church, Lawrenceville.

Our Lady of Mercy High School, Fayetteville

Our Lady of Mercy High School, Fayetteville, will graduate 81 seniors.

The commencement ceremony is Saturday, May 18, at 12 p.m., at the high school, 861 Highway 279, Fayetteville. Archbishop Gregory and Dr. Starkovich will be special guests at the ceremony.

The baccalaureate Mass will be celebrated at St. Philip Benizi Church, Jonesboro, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, by Bishop David P. Talley, auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese.

Victoria L. Shurman, the daughter of Rodney and Stephanie Shurman, and a member of St. Gabriel Church, Fayetteville, is the class valedictorian.

Steven A. Johnston, the son of Wade and Stephanie Johnston, is the class salutatorian. He is a member of St. Matthew Church, Tyrone.

Blessed Trinity High School, Roswell 

The Blessed Trinity High School class of 2013 will receive its diplomas on Saturday, May 18, at 3:30 p.m. at the school gymnasium.

Archbishop Gregory and Dr. Starkovich will be guests at the ceremony on the Roswell campus.

On Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Peter Chanel Church, Roswell, the school community will gather for a baccalaureate Mass. Msgr. Joseph Corbett, the vicar general of the archdiocese, will be the celebrant. There are 223 members of the class.

Katherine Lanthier, the daughter of Margaret and Kenneth Lanthier, is the class valedictorian. The family attends St. Benedict Church, Johns Creek. Madeline Baker of Roswell, the daughter of Jill and Michael Baker, is the salutatorian. They worship at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Alpharetta.

Independent Catholic Schools

Monsignor Donovan High School, Athens

The 33 seniors at Monsignor Donovan High School, Athens, will graduate on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. The commencement ceremony is at the high school.

Students will attend a baccalaureate Mass at St. Joseph Church, Athens, on Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m. Father David McGuiness, pastor, is the celebrant.

Lori Elizabeth Hanna, the daughter of Mark and Julie Hanna, is the class valedictorian. They attend the First Baptist Church of Athens. The salutatorian is Julie Ann Barton, the daughter of John and Michelle Barton, who are members of the Catholic Center at the University of Georgia.

Pinecrest Academy, Cumming

Pinecrest Academy, Cumming, will graduate 51 seniors on Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m. The commencement ceremony will take place in the Pinecrest Upper School gymnasium. Peter Kreeft is the keynote speaker.

A baccalaureate Mass will be celebrated in the Upper School gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 24. Legionaries of Christ Father Robert Presutti is the celebrant, along with Legionaries of Christ Father Richard Sutter, chaplain, and other priests.

For the girls school, the valedictorian is Annie Lagomasino, the daughter of Jill and Raymond Lagomasino, who attend St. Brendan the Navigator Church, Cumming. The salutatorian is Erica Papa, the daughter of Lisa and Chris Papa, who belong to St. Benedict Church, Johns Creek.

For the boys school, the valedictorian is Austin Ward, the son of Darla and Ken Ward, who worship at St. Brigid Church, Johns Creek. The salutatorian is Rafael Skokanic, the son of Laurie and Paul Skokanic, who attend St. Michael the Archangel Church, Woodstock.

Marist School, Atlanta

The 192 members of Marist School’s class of 2013 will receive their diplomas on Saturday, May 25, at 2 p.m., at the Marist School Centennial Center, Atlanta. Archbishop Gregory will be a guest at the ceremony, along with the 2013 Marist Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient.

On Friday, May 24, at 8 p.m., at the Centennial Center, the school community will gather for a baccalaureate Mass. Marist Father David Musso, school chaplain, will be the celebrant.

Jack Leahey, the son of Thomas and Aileen Leahey, is the class valedictorian. The family attends St. Jude the Apostle Church, Atlanta.

Jason Morris, the son of James Morris and Robin Johnson, is the class salutatorian. They are members of Christ our Hope Church, Lithonia.

Holy Spirit Preparatory School, Atlanta

The commencement ceremony for the graduates at Holy Spirit Preparatory School, Atlanta, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, at 12:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church, Atlanta. Jim Towey, president of Ave Maria University, Naples, Fla., and previously director of the White House Office for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, is the special guest at the graduation.

The ceremony follows a baccalaureate Mass at 10:30 a.m. The celebrant for the Mass is Archbishop Gregory.

There are 46 graduating seniors at the independent Catholic school. The names of the valedictorian and the salutatorian, following the school’s tradition, have not yet been released.
