Annual ‘Scott’s Sprint’ To Benefit Children’s Project

Published October 13, 2005

Catholic Social Services will hold the fourth annual Scott’s Sprint Memorial Fun Run (5K run and one-mile walk) at Freedom Parkway Path at the Carter Center on Saturday, Oct. 22, beginning at 8 a.m.

This year CSS invites the public to participate and to compete for the newly created trophy called “Mei Mei’s Trophy.” This trophy was named after the first child rescued from detention by CSS’s Immigration Services. Corporate teams can win the “Scott’s Spirit Award” to be given to the largest team of a “big” firm and a “small” firm. Over 5,000 foreign-born children are victims of abuse, abandonment, trafficking, prostitution and modern-day slavery, and they end up in U.S. custody each year as they are discovered without visas or papers. CSS represents and rescues these children who have suffered through extreme circumstances.

CSS has worked closely with the officers of the INS (now the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Services in the Office of Homeland Security), who oversee the custody of these children. One of these officers, Scott Starratt, stood out among his peers for his kind treatment and care of these displaced children. Starratt died tragically in a car accident in 2001, and Scott’s Sprint was established in his memory. All proceeds go directly to the Children’s Project of the CSS Immigration Services Program to ensure that these children are represented and given a chance. Many have been saved through Immigration Services of Catholic Social Services.

Details about the race, including applications, course and directions may be found on the CSS Web site at www.cssatlanta.com or by contacting Catholic Social Services, Inc. at (404) 881-6571.

Race fees are $20 for either the 5K run or one-mile fun run. Those who cannot participate can send $25 to participate as a phantom runner. All participants will receive a Scott’s Sprint 2005 T-shirt. T-shirts will be mailed to phantom runners and late registrants.

For sponsorships or more information, contact Barbara Dobson at (404) 885-7474 or e-mail her at bdobson@archatl.com. Participants can register online at www.active.com. Those who wish to register by mail can call CSS to have an application mailed to them.
