SANDY SPRINGS—Pinecrest Academy, Cumming, went on the road for their season opener against the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Mustangs Dec. 4. After a slow start by Pinecrest and with two of its senior starters, Jeff Terry and John Drapeau, in early foul trouble, Mount Vernon led 35-23 at halftime. Pinecrest overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half before going on to win 58-53. Mount Vernon junior Amin Stevens poured in 30 points for the Mustangs. Pinecrest was led by seniors Michael Metz and Brian Guhde, who scored 30 and 11 points, respectively. The Mustangs fell to 4-4 for the season and the Paladins moved to 1-0. Pinecrest head coach Andres Montana said he was not surprised by his team’s slow start. An extended football season limited a number of the Pinecrest players to only four practices before their first game. Pinecrest hosts Monsignor Donovan High School, Athens, Dec. 14, and then they travel to Kennesaw to face North Cobb Christian School, Dec. 15.
