A delegation of approximately 15 clergy and lay
people returned to Atlanta Tuesday a little dizzy from the powerful experience
of seeing Pope Paul in New York.
The group, including prominent members of the lay
community left Atlanta to attend the historic pilgrimage of Pope Paul on
Sunday. They were: Msgr. Joseph P. Cassidy, V.G., pastor Sacred Heart Parish,
Milledgeville; Msgr. Michael Regan, VF, pastor, Immaculate Heart of Mary
Parish; the Rev. Richard Kieran, assistant pastor, Immaculate Heart of Mary
Parish; the Rev. Daniel OConnor, Secretary for Education and principal,
St. Joseph High School; the Rev. Patrick C. Connell, chaplain, Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Cancer Home and Secretary for Health and Hospitals.
Mrs. Thomas Bockman, Archdiocesan Liturgy
Commission, Mrs. George Gunning, Religious Unity Commission; Mrs. E. P. Faust,
Jr., immediate past president, Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women; Herbert
Farnsworth, general chairman, Lay Congress; Lewis Gordon, vice president,
Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men and Serra Club; Robert L. Matthews,
secretary, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Sacred Heart Parish; and Paul Smith,
president of Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men and Serra Club.
The delegations every waking moment was
spent trailing about New York for every possible glimpse of the pope. They were
successful in many tries.
Perhaps their longest look at the Holy Father was
gained at Yankee Stadium where they joined about 90,000 others at the Papal
Mass and sat in uncomfortably nippy air to hear the pontiffs words of
peace.
The chilling night air might just as well have
been a balmy, gulf breeze to the delegation so warmed were they in the
popes presence. They joined in the cheering and their words to express
their feelings at the moment were Its just wonderful, He is so
wonderful. |
