Dedication Held At St. Joseph's Inmirmary

Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan dedicated the new St. Joseph’s Infirmary Nurses Residence and Education Building on Sunday in ceremonies which were attended by religious and civic leaders from Atlanta and the archdiocese.

Russell Bellman, chairman of the Infirmary’s advisory board presided at the outdoor exercises and the invocation was given by Father Thomas J. Roshetko, S.M., pastor of nearby Sacred Heart Church. The address of welcome was given by Atlanta’s mayor, Hon. Ivan Allen, Jr.

Following Archbishop Hallinan’s dedication, Dr. Noah Langdale, president of Georgia State College, spoke on the importance to the community, both from a service and educational standpoint, of the new buildings. The response was given by Sister Mary Melanie, R.S.M., administrator of St. Joseph’s. An open house followed the services.

McAuley Hall, the eight-story residence building, is named after Mother Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy who staff the Infirmary. The structure has, on the main floor, a spacious lounge with open fireplace, five private parlors and a reception area. The upper floors contain suites of rooms with connection baths. A large recreation room is provided. The building will house 210 student nurses.

The education building, connected to McAuley Hall by an enclosed breezeway, has classrooms, laboratories, library and offices. There is a large swimming pool in the basement.

The two buildings were designed by Abreu and Robeson. Construction was by the Ray M. Lee Company, with interior decoration by Ray Lang, Inc.
